FRANS NOTTROT

Frans Nottrot (Voorschoten, 1955) grew up in Den Helder, and lives in Amsterdam ever since 1977, working as a painter and musician. He graduated from Art School Rotterdam, 1982. Atmospheric abstracts like those of Edgar Fernhout, and the realistic abstract period of Piet Mondriaan, were influences that proved to be the foundation for Nottrot’s work of art. Also 'Colorfield Painting' like by Mark Rothko is recognisable in his current work.

These influences as foundation, Nottrot developed his own unique style. He uses rectangled or square canvasses, to which he applies his pure colours (never mixed with white or black) with a palette-knife. He found a way to combine the above mentioned atmospheric-abstract way of painting, with a more basic way of painting that he had become familiar with early in his life, being apprentice in the studio of Rudi van de Wint. The latter is known, amongst other things, for the paintings in the Dutch House of Parliament. A recurrent theme all through his work is a fascination for nature and a playing with light and shadows, something derived from his childhood spent in Den Helder (literally translated as 'The Lucid'). The result are canvasses that have the ambivalent Colorfield-feeling of extravert and introvert blended together; they exhale a silenced harmony, referring dawn in nature. Nottrot tries to seduce the viewer to approach the canvas in such a way, as if it were an icon.

For some years already, Frans has felt a need to back away from the strict abstract formulas that for years he applied to his work. Wanting to free himself from a certain preoccupation regarding the history of art, he felt that enjoying the art of actually painting should be in first place.
Ever since winter of 2014, Frans explores how to be able to reflect his position as an artist in relation to nature in a more casual way.
His ultimate goal is to express universal moods of nature which we all experience, on to the canvas. In doing so he does not have any intent to forget his ever-present focus on fundamental painting.

Frans Nottrot has had exhibitions at various important (Dutch) galleries and museums. His work has found its way to individuals in The Netherlands as well as far across the Dutch borders. Several large Dutch companies and institutions like PostNL and Triodos Bank have his work in their collection.

.... entering a room where Frans Nottrot’s paintings are exhibited, they may appear like ‘black holes’. They share one similarity with this cosmic phenomenon though: they both have a huge attraction...  Quotation

2025 november 25: Declared as "Hijo Adoptivo del Municipio de Alosno" - honorary citizen of Alosno/Huelva/Spanje.

Remark

The photographs shown at this site are a mere superficial impression of the three-dimensional paintings. That means every alternating position of the viewer shows different result in the painting. Therefore to capture the true depth of the paintings has not yet been accomplished by anyone...
